Sydenham River Canoe Race

April 8, 2010

For Immediate Release

The 37th annual Sydenham River Canoe Race will be held on Sunday, April 18, 2010.

The race, which is sponsored by the St. Clair Region Conservation Authority, begins on Mosside Road just west of County Road 79 north of Cairo in Dawn Euphemia and features 10 classes and three different race lengths. All classes finish at the Shetland Conservation Area on Bentpath Line.

Participants are being asked, on a voluntary basis, to seek sponsors for their efforts. The funds raised will be used to help support outdoor education for school children in the St. Clair region.

In the five mile races the classes are recreation, staff, V.I.P. ladies and touring (the over 50 crowd). The recreation class is open to everyone while the staff class is for staff of the Authority and other government and municipal agencies. The V.I.P. class is open to Authority members, councillors, Media, M.P.'s, M.P.P.'s. The seven and twelve mile races include, mixed, kayak and expert classes. For those who belong to the Ontario Marathon Canoe Racers Association, the race is sanctioned by OMCRA. Last year, 130 people in 76 canoes and kayaks vied for the bragging rights and $2,600 was raised for Conservation Education.

Trophies are presented to all first place winners and ribbons are given to the top three winners in each class. In addition the top fundraiser will receive a trophy. Registration for the race is from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. and all races begin at 11:20 a.m. In the event of poor weather, please listen to local radio stations or call 882-2399 for a message. For more information or a sponsor sheet, visit our website at www.scrca.on.ca or call Sharon at the Lorne C. Henderson Conservation Area at (519) 882-2399.
