River Canoe Race

The 37th annual Sydenham River Canoe Race will be held on Sunday,
April 18, 2010.
The race, which is sponsored by the St. Clair Region Conservation
Authority, begins on Mosside Road just west of County Road 79 north of
Cairo in Dawn Euphemia and features 10 classes and three different race
lengths. All classes finish at the Shetland Conservation Area on
Bentpath Line.
Participants are being asked, on a voluntary basis, to seek sponsors for
their efforts. The funds raised will be used to help support outdoor
education for school children in the St. Clair region.
In the five mile races the classes are recreation, staff, V.I.P. ladies
and touring (the over 50 crowd). The recreation class is open to
everyone while the staff class is for staff of the Authority and other
government and municipal agencies. The V.I.P. class is open to Authority
members, councillors, Media, M.P.'s, M.P.P.'s. The seven and twelve mile
races include, mixed, kayak and expert classes. For those who belong to
the Ontario Marathon Canoe Racers Association, the race is sanctioned by
OMCRA. Last year, 130 people in 76 canoes and kayaks vied for the
bragging rights and $2,600 was raised for Conservation Education.
Trophies are presented to all first place winners and ribbons are given
to the top three winners in each class. In addition the top fundraiser
will receive a trophy. Registration for the race is from 10 a.m. to 11
a.m. and all races begin at 11:20 a.m. In the event of poor weather,
