Come hear Ontario farmers discuss experiences with cover crops & improving soil health
DISCUSSION PANEL:
Woody Van Arkel, Dresden
Cash crop farmer growing corn, soybeans, wheat & sugar beets; also has a contract hog finishing barn. President of Innovative Farmers of Ontario & has keen interest in environmentally sustainable agriculture & cover crops.
Andy Van Niekerk, CCA, Sutton
Always willing to try new techniques, he shares the “mistakes/experiences” that he makes on his own farm. He never really learned how to plow; instead has been completely no-till for 10 years. He cover crops after wheat & plants cover crop into standing corn for soybean planting the next year. His experience shows soil microbiology is key component in the productive capability of soils. Director of Innovative Farmers of Ontario.
Jim Patton, Everett
He grew up on a cow/calf, feedlot operation in the 80’s & 90’s; graduated a 98A from Guelph & made a change that spring. Now owns/operates a hatching egg & breeder grower operation. Cash crop corn, soys & wheat. The family business does their own excavation, harvesting, trucking, planting etc & only hire out spray application & top dress application. They are all about business. Chicken or otherwise. Soil health, bird health, synergy between livestock & crop. Director of Innovative Farmers of Ontario. Life motto: work hard & play hard too.
Mel Luymes, Drayton
