Spring has Sprung - FDK-Gr 4
Available April-June 2024
Start your Spring by studying the variety of changes that occur in nature. Flowers in blossom, budding trees, nest building, life cycles, habitats, and more will be presented to your students through a nature hike and activities.


Pond Pals - FDK-Gr 3
Available September-November & April-June 2024
Explore the pond habitat as we look for frogs, turtles, tadpoles, fish, insects, and more! Students will learn about animal needs, life-cycles, habitats, and how all the parts of the pond work together as a community!


The Lorax - FDK-Gr 4
Available September-November & April-June 2024
The Dr. Seuss story introduces students to the importance of clean air, fresh water, and animal habitats through a hike and environmental nature activities.


Circle of Life - Gr 2
Available September-November & April-June 2024
During this role-playing game, students learn the life cycle of a butterfly, exploring metamorphosis, meeting their needs, and escaping predators! An interpretive hike, allows students to learn more, by looking for real-life examples of life-cycles, in the Conservation Area. Pond exploration OR insect sweep net activity is available upon request. 


Plants, Trees & Soils – Gr 2-4
Available September-November & April-June 2024
Soil is the foundation for all life on Earth. Without soil, we cannot grow plants, which form the base of the food chain. During this hands-on program, students will explore the forest floor, looking under leaves, rolling logs, and discovering the life found below. We will uncover nurse logs, discuss decomposition and watch leaves and logs crumble back into soil! Then students will turn their eyes to the sky, to learn more about the trees, their parts, their needs, and their connection to the soil below. 


Choose your Own Adventure Orienteering – Gr 2-5
Available September-November & April-June 2024
Students navigate through a 'choose your own Adventure' story with the aid of a map and compass to locate 'adventure stations'. Along the route, students make animal survival decisions & earn survival 'points' in an attempt to be the strongest survivor! 

Owl Prowl - Gr 3-5
Available September-November & April-June 2024
'Birds of prey by night or day, hunt their food before it strays'. Students become owls & through an active simulation game, they learn how owls meet their needs, what specialized adaptations help them survive, and what roles they play within their habitats. 

Boots, Birds & Bugs - Gr 4
Available September-November & April-June 2024
Students participate in a habitat study at the Conservation Area. We will explore 2 habitats; the pond & the forest.  Exploring habitats means looking for animal and plant adaptations that suit each space and observing the food chains that exist within. 


A Bug's World – Gr 6
Available September-November & April-June 2024
Identification and Classification are easy concepts to understand when we look at insects and other invertebrates found in the Conservation Area. This program explores the biodiversity found in two habitats; the pond and the forest. Students learn basic classification techniques and then apply them to real-life 'bugs' during this field experiment!


Endangered Species Game - Gr 4-6
Available Anytime! September 2023-June 2024
This active game introduces students to some of the Species at Risk found in Ontario. Students role-play 'special concern', 'threatened', and 'endangered' species trying to survive the many threats affecting local wildlife. Student success decides which species go extinct and which expand their populations, and thereby change their 'at risk' status. 

Pokecaching - Gr 4-8
Available Anytime! September 2023-June 2024
Pokecaching is a "Pokemon Go" inspired geocaching game designed by LKDSB Enrichment Students that puts Geography curriculum into action.  Participating students will use GPS units to locate Pokecaches.  Tokens will be collected for a "Pokemon Gym Battle" at the conclusion of the 2 hour program.

Instincts for Survival - Gr 4-8

'Survival of the fittest' is nature's law that assists the balance of nature. This simulation game teaches students about species inter-dependencies, predator/prey relationships, survival adaptations, and tactics, natural and human impacts of wildlife.

Wild, Wild Wetlands – Gr 7-8
Available September-November & April-June 2024
Students explore a wetland ecosystem during this field study! Observing the plants & animals found in a wetland can tell a scientist a lot about the health of that system. Students are introduced to water quality and during the program will complete a benthic bio-indicator study, which will help determine the quality of water in the pond at Henderson Conservation Area. 


Fabulous Fall - FDK-Gr 3
Available September-November 2025 
Students are invited to an Autumn Adventure in the Conservation Area! The Fall season offers so much to explore; hibernation, migration, and dormancy are happening all around. This action-packed, hands-on field trip allows students to become Forest Detectives, uncovering the secret lives of plants & animals.

Learn the history, geography, and biology of the space you call home! During this program, students will take a critical look at their own watershed learning more about human impact through time and space. Using the Conservation Area as our classroom, students will learn inventory techniques designed to assess the health of a forest system. Observation highlights the impacts of deforestation, & agriculture on the plants, animals, and people of this place. 


Healing Hike

Connects specifically to Mental Health and Student Well-Being

Research continues to grow connecting time spent in nature with human health. Studies have shown that time spent in the forest improves both physical and mental health. Join us for a guided 'healing hike' where St. Clair Ed Staff teaches a series of awareness-building, stress-reducing activities. Students record heart rate, breathing rate, and stress rate before and after the hike to add a measurable component to the student's experience.

Water Quality 101 
Available September-November & May-June 2024
Curriculum Connections - SNC1D, SNC1P, SNC2D, SNC2P, SBI3U, SBI3C, SCH4C, SVN3M, SVN3E, CGC1D, CGC1P, CGR4U, CGW4U, THH3E.

Students participate in a Stream Assessment, modeled after OBBN protocol. Students will learn the basics of a water quality based on 3 data sets; physical characteristics, water chemistry, and benthic invertebrate communities. In this 'field lab' students will use real-time observations, specimen collections, and data sets to complete their own water quality study.

Spiny Softshell Turtle Recovery Video  
Gr 4-12 
The Sydenham River supports an amazing diversity of aquatic and semi-aquatic life including several Species at Risk. In this video, the St. Clair Region Conservation Authority introduces the Federally and Provincially Endangered Eastern Spiny Softshell Turtle, the threats it faces, and how the SCRCA in partnership with landowners along the Sydenham, are working together to recover this species.

Great Lakes Virtual Field Trip ~ The Huron-Erie Corridor  Gr 8-10

This educational resource aims to increase awareness of the role the Great Lakes have in our everyday lives by creating learning opportunities for teachers, parents, and students through a virtual learning tool that will introduce them to their Great Lakes shoreline. Aquatic Species At Risk - Gr 4-12

This pre-recorded virtual program provides an in-depth look at LOCAL species at risk.  The river these animals depend upon for survival, the Sydenham River, is considered one of the most biodiverse rivers in Canada. Students learn about local threats to our watershed using a hands-on 'enviro-scape' model. Phosphorus 101 – Gr 8-12

Developed in tandem with the ‘Sydenham Watershed Phosphorus Management Plan’, this program is designed to introduce students to the environmental issues created by phosphorus loading in Lake Erie. After receiving an introduction to the issue, students are led through an Innovation, Creativity, Entrepreneurship training session, brainstorming solutions to the excess phosphorus problem. This is a multi-visit program designed to take place over 2 teaching periods. 

Aquatic Species at Risk SECONDARY – Gr 9-12

Available December 2024 - March 2025

This program provides an opportunity to discuss LOCAL Species at Risk in the context of climate change, ecology, and watershed geography. Topics discussed include stacked climate impacts, invasive species, population dynamics, habitat restoration, environmental protection laws/strategies. Information is local and reflects the current situation in the St Clair Watershed. Educators are happy to specialize the program to meet specific curriculums needs.

The Conservation Authority implements programs to reduce the risk to life and property from flooding and erosion; water and land stewardship; forestry; wildlife habitat creation and outdoor recreation.
