Flood Watch – September 22, 2021 – Event 13, Bulletin 2

September 22, 2021
Highlights:

    • 25-50 mm rain received across the region in the past 24 hours
    • Forecast calling for additional 50-85 mm rain today
    • Water levels rising, potential for impacted roads
    • Gale Wind Warning for Lakes St. Clair and Huron
    • Storm surge, minor coastal flooding, possible erosion
Gauges throughout the watershed received between 25 and 50 mm of rain in the past 24 hours. Forecasts are calling for an additional 20-50 mm of rain this afternoon and 20-35 mm this evening overnight into early Thursday. High-end total rainfall amounts for this 48-hour period could exceed 130 mm, however local rainfall amounts may vary.

High amounts of rainfall in a short period of time can lead to increased runoff and flash flooding, particularly in urban areas. Residents in these areas may experience ponding and/or flooding on roads should the rainfall intensity be greater than local storm drain capacity.

Water levels are beginning to rise across the watershed and are anticipated to elevate into natural floodplain areas, parks and farm fields. Soils are expected to be saturated from the rain and could contribute to ponding, increased runoff into watercourses, and possible increased erosion and seepage issues.

The following roads may become impacted by flooding:

    • Stanley Line between Kimball Road and Waubuno Road
    • Pretty Road north of McCallum Line
    • Waterworks Road north of Courtright Line
A Gale Wind Warning is in effect for Lake St. Clair and Lake Huron. Wind gusts from the north are anticipated to be between 80-90 km/h over Lake Huron, with waves building up to four metres in height early this evening. Residents along this shoreline may experience increased wave action, erosion, and coastal flooding.

Residents are reminded to avoid shorelines, watercourses and flooded areas due to dangerous conditions, slippery banks and cold, swift moving water. Children and pets should be kept away from the water.

The Conservation Authority continues to monitor watershed conditions and will issue advisories to municipalities and media should flood issues arise.

Municipal emergency response staff and road superintendents should monitor local conditions closely.

This message will remain in effect until Friday, September 24, 2021, unless otherwise updated.
