Flood Watch – April 29, 2019 – Event 5 Bulletin 3

April 29, 2019

Highlights:

  • Upwards of 55 mm of rain received since Thursday
  • Possible 50 mm of rain forecast in the coming days
  • Fast flowing water and slippery stream banks
  • Road closures

The following roads are still impacted by high water levels. These include:

  • Waterworks Road between Courtright Line and Moore Line
  • Stanley Line east of Kimball Road

Heavy precipitation ranging from 20 to 55 mm in the lower reaches of the Sydenham River late last week resulted in rising water levels and flooding across the region. Water levels remain elevated, however are falling as of this bulletin.

A low pressure system is expected to bring rain into southern Ontario starting this morning and into the coming days, with the potential of upwards of 50 mm of rain through to Wednesday evening. This precipitation has the potential to elevate water levels into natural floodplain areas, agricultural fields and parks. Soils already saturated from the rain this past week could contribute to ponding and increased runoff into watercourses.

River banks are expected to be slippery, with possible minor erosion. Residents are reminded to avoid watercourses and flooded areas due to slippery banks and cold, swift moving water. Children and pets should be kept away from the water.

The Conservation Authority continues to monitor watershed conditions and will issue advisories to municipalities and media should flood issues arise. Municipal emergency response staff and road superintendents should monitor local conditions closely.

This message will remain in effect until Wednesday, May 1, 2019 unless otherwise updated.
