Message: Rising water levels, potential for flooded roads.
This past weekend the St. Clair Region watershed received approximately 10 mm of freezing rain (Saturday), followed by above-freezing temperatures and 15 to 30 mm of rain (Sunday). Water levels have reacted quickly to the rain, with many areas of the Sydenham River flooded into natural floodplain and low-lying areas.
Water levels on Bear Creek near Brigden and Black Creek near Bickford Line are showing early indications of cresting, however levels across both the north and east branches of the Sydenham River are continuing to rise which could lead to flooding of roads, particularly in the areas of Strathroy, Petrolia, and St. Clair and Enniskillen townships. Municipal emergency response staff and road superintendents should monitor local conditions closely and are encouraged to relay information regarding flooded roads and road closures to conservation authority staff.
Below-freezing overnight and daytime temperatures forecast for this week will aid in keeping the snow and ice currently stored on land from entering the system, however with the lack of ice cover on the watercourses, the 5 to 15 cm of accumulated snow Tuesday through Wednesday could slow the receding water.
Individuals are reminded to avoid watercourses and flooded areas due to dangerous conditions, slippery banks, unsafe ice conditions and swift moving water. Children and pets should be kept away from the water.
The Conservation Authority continues to monitor watershed conditions and will issue advisories to municipalities and media should flood issues arise.
