Flood Watch
Message:
Rising water levels, continued rain and snowmelt.
The St. Clair Region Conservation Authority (SCRCA) is issuing a Flood Watch for the entire watershed.
Above-seasonal temperatures and 5 to 20 mm of rain over the past week has resulted in deteriorated snowpack and elevated water levels, with some areas having spilled into natural floodplain and low-lying areas. This recent rainfall and snowmelt has reduced the soil’s capacity to absorb further rainfall, which could lead to increased runoff.
Ten to 15 mm of rain is forecast late tonight (Thursday) and into tomorrow (Friday), with another 5 to 10 mm of rain possible Saturday. Current temperatures are well above freezing and are forecast to remain that way through Friday, dropping below freezing overnight before a brief return to mild temperatures Saturday.
Water levels are anticipated to rise rapidly and may lead to pooling on roads and fields. Should we receive the higher end of the rainfall forecast, water levels could impact roads. Municipal staff should monitor local conditions closely, with special attention to known drainage problem areas. Any remaining ice in watercourses may block flows during a runoff event and increase flooding potential.
Individuals are reminded to avoid watercourses and flooded areas due to dangerous conditions, slippery banks, unsafe ice cover and cold, swift moving water. Children and pets should be kept away from the water.
The Conservation Authority continues to monitor watershed conditions and will issue advisories to municipalities and media should flood issues arise. Municipal emergency response staff and road superintendents should monitor local conditions closely.
This message will remain in effect until 12 p.m. Monday, January 12th, 2026, unless otherwise updated.
