Watershed Conditions Statement – Flood Outlook
Message: Rising Water Levels, Continued Snowmelt
The St. Clair Region Conservation Authority (SCRCA) expects water levels to stay elevated over the weekend and into early next week. Watercourses have not yet peaked – this is expected to happen over the next two days.
Above-seasonal temperatures and 8 to 24 mm of rain this week have elevated water levels. Some areas have spilled into natural floodplains and low-lying areas that often flood during the spring. Water pooling on roads is possible. The SCRCA is not aware of any water-related road issues or road closures.
More runoff is expected today with temperatures above freezing continuing to melt remaining snow. Snowmelt and rainfall have reduced the soil’s capacity to absorb water. Water levels are expected to continue to rise today with more snowmelt and runoff.
Temperatures are forecast to drop back to freezing tonight and remain close to or below freezing over the next week.
Municipal staff should monitor local conditions closely, with special attention to known drainage problem areas. Any remaining ice in watercourses may block flows during a runoff event and increase flooding potential.
Individuals are reminded to avoid watercourses and flooded areas due to dangerous conditions, slippery banks, unsafe ice cover and cold, swift moving water. Children and pets should be kept away from the water.
The Conservation Authority continues to monitor watershed conditions and will issue advisories to municipalities and media should flood issues arise. Municipal emergency response staff and road superintendents should monitor local conditions closely.
