Highlights:
- Snow melt from warm temperatures causing river water levels to rise
- Precipitation forecast for the next 3 days
- Road closures expected
Short Term:
Water levels on the Sydenham River and its tributaries are starting to rise as a result of above normal temperatures and snow melt. Temperatures are forecast to remain well above normal through Thursday. Precipitation forecasts for the next 3 days are wide ranging with total accumulations varying from 40–50 mm (1.6– 2 inches) over the period. The existing snowpack is measured to be equivalent to near 10 mm of water. The snow will initially absorb some of the rain but as temperatures rise the percentage of runoff will increase. The remaining snow will continue to melt with above freezing temperatures. A lack of frost in many areas will allow infiltration and should reduce runoff and may assist in controlling water levels.
This Week:
Water levels are expected rise throughout the week and exceed the top of bank to create localized flooding. Levels will continue to rise during the day Tuesday, with localized flooding expanding during the day and overnight. Several roads in St. Clair and Enniskillen Townships may be closed due to flood conditions as early as Wednesday and these conditions may continue into the weekend. Temperatures are expected to return to near normal on Thursday with daytime highs below freezing. This will slow additional runoff and forecasted precipitation is expected to fall as snow.
Municipal emergency response staff and road superintendents should review emergency response plans and monitor local conditions closely. Additional bulletins will be issued should conditions change.
Residents are reminded to avoid watercourses and flood areas due to slippery banks and cold and swift moving water.
The St. Clair Region Conservation Authority will monitor the flood condition of the watersheds in the region and will provide warnings to municipal officials and media in the event conditions develop which could result in the potential of more severe flooding.
