Highlights:
- Localized flooding along portions of the Sydenham River
- Ice conditions deteriorating rapidly
- Slippery stream banks
- Road closures continue
Current:
Water levels on the Sydenham River and its tributaries are rising as a result of above normal temperatures and snow melt. Water levels are expected to peak in upstream areas (Bear Creek at Petrolia and the Sydenham River at Strathroy) later this evening before moving downstream. Localized flooding is occurring at a number of locations (Strathroy, Alvinston, Florence Petrolia and Oil springs) while some areas have bank full conditions.
In St. Clair Township, Waterworks Road, north of Courtright Line and Pretty Road South of Stanley Line are closed due to flooding. In Enniskillen township Fairweather Road between Rokeby and Shiloh Line and Fairweather Road between Oil Springs Line and Aberfeldy Line.
Water levels are expected to peak over the next 24 hours in the lower branches of the Sydenham River system (Dresden and Wallaceburg). Small ice jams may slightly impede water from moving downstream, however they are not expected to cause water levels to rise significantly. Ice conditions are deteriorating quickly with open water appearing along the shoreline in all areas. Municipal officials and road superintendents should monitor local conditions.
Municipal emergency response staff and road superintendents should monitor local conditions closely.
Residents are reminded to avoid watercourses and flooded areas due to slippery banks, cold and swift moving water and deteriorating ice. Parents in particular are urged to keep their children away from floodplain areas.
The St. Clair Region Conservation Authority will monitor the flood condition of the watersheds in the region and will provide warnings to municipal officials and media in the event conditions develop which could result in the potential of flooding.
